3-star EDGE Anelu Lafaele impressed by Arizona State on official visit

Honolulu (Hi.) Farrington three-star EDGE Anelu Lafaele took his first official visit last weekend to Arizona State. It marked his second trip to the Sun Devils in roughly two months.

According to Lafaele, his interest in Arizona State increased “a little bit” following his official. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound pass rusher believes that Tempe is an “awesome place” to be and a “great place to play.”

“They have really good coaches,” Lafaele told On3. “They’re very straightforward and they know what they want in their players and they expect the same back from players.”

The coaches at Arizona State, one of Lafaele’s top seven schools, are a key reason for his interest in the Sun Devils. While in Tempe, he spoke with the entire staff and developed his relationship with head coach Kenny Dillingham.

“He’s a fun guy,” said Lafaele, the No. 402 overall prospect and No. 30 EDGE in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking. “Everything about him is awesome.”

According to Lafaele, Dillingham made it clear that Arizona State is very interested in landing a commitment from him. The Sun Devils’ head man is also recommending that Lafaele take his time making a decision, which he appreciated.

In addition to Dillingham, Lafaele has bonded with assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Charlie Ragle and running backs coach Shaun Aguano.

“I went into a position meeting with coach Ragle and he was telling me about the scheme,” Lafaele said. “He was going over his techniques and what he expects out of me if I were to go to ASU.”

Lafaele likes what Arizona State offers off the field

In addition to seeing Arizona State’s coaches again, Lafaele wanted to experience more of the Sun Devils’ campus and its surroundings on his official. He achieved both those goals last weekend.

Lafaele saw Arizona State’s facilities and dorms, as well as what the program offers in multiple areas such as education and strength and conditioning. He also toured Tempe with players, including his host and defensive lineman Samuel Benjamin.

“They showed me all the cool spots, all the good places to eat and all the things that go on in the area,” Lafaele said. “That was pretty cool. It’s a very live area.”

Going to dinner with Benjamin and coaches marked the highlight of Lafaele’s official. Multiple players, including Benjamin, shared with him that the Sun Devils are on the road to success under Dillingham.

“They basically said that they’re on the come up,” Lafaele said. “They’re bringing in guys from the portal, they’re getting commitments from juniors and seniors. They said that the team last year isn’t going to be what it is this year. It’s going to be something special now.”
