3-2-1: What to learn about Kansas State in Arlington

3-2-1: What to learn about Kansas State in Arlington

THREE THINGS WE LEARNED ABOUT KANSAS STATE

1. Purple and Black: The Kansas State alumni TBT (The Basketball Tournament) team Purple and Black has added two more players to the roster that already consisted of the likes of Jacob Pullen, Marcus Foster, DJ Johnson, Henry Walker, Mike McGuirl, Justin Edwards and Kamau Stokes. They’ll be joined by a couple of players from last year’s K-State roster in Desi Sills and Abayomi Iyiola.

2. Chili Davis: After the departure of Will Burnham, Chris Klieman and Kansas State were in need of a special teams quality control coach. They have found one in Chili Davis, who was announced by the school in the last week. He is considered a coach on the rise.

3. Kentucky offer: We discuss him often, but Patrick Ngongba is a K-State hoops target that has seen his stock soar in the last few months. It continues to do so after being offered by Kentucky. The other Wildcats are expected to present a challenge for Kansas State. For the record, he was also offered by Texas.

TWO QUESTIONS

1. NIL competitiveness: Just how competitive is K-State on the NIL front? Those that would know typically describe them as pretty average when compared to the rest of the country and competitive enough to where it isn’t a deterrent on the recruiting trail. They do typically agree that it could stand to be a bit better, though. But the coaching staffs are willing to play the game and even sometimes meet with donors from the school in hopes of unlocking more funds for their respective programs.

2. Insight: I’m intrigued as to whether or not we’ll gain any additional insight about the Kansas State roster while in Arlington meeting with the contingent from the Wildcats at Big 12 Media Days. K-State will be represented by Klieman, Kobe Savage, Daniel Green, Will Howard and Cooper Beebe.

ONE K-STATE PREDICTION

1. Defensive depth: If there is one thing that I’ve gathered after speaking to multiple sources throughout the offseason, the uncertainty of who starts in certain places on the defensive side of the ball for Kansas State isn’t a case of not having enough talent. In fact, anymore, I’m not sure it’s a case of not having guys ready to contribute, either. Really, and what is an increasingly strong sign for the program, it’s that they have plenty of players that are good enough to do so. While the heavy playmakers from a season ago are gone, K-State may be yet again an even more complete unit across the board. Some guys will have to step up and be clutch and come through in the right moments, but they have enough talent and skill to repeat. It really hit me when I was having a recruiting-centric conversation, and part of the discussion centered on the Wildcats not knowing how many to take and where because almost everyone has eligibility remaining and guys they don’t want to lose.
