2026 PG Maddyn Greenway talks Team USA tryouts and updates her recruitment

Class of 2026 PG Maddyn Greenway has been a star ever since she stepped on the court for as a seventh grader on the varsity squad for Providence Academy. The recruiting rankings, her offer list and her high school accolades through three seasons confirm that she is a highly-touted prospect despite the fact that she is only entering her sophomore year this fall for the Lions. ESPN rates her as a four-star recruit and the #15 overall prospect in the country, while Prep Girls Hoops tabs Greenway as the #1 recruit in the state of Minnesota.

Her parents, Chad and Jenni, both played sports at the University of Iowa and back in September of 2021, 13-year old Maddyn was dialed in on the Hawkeyes. She told GopherHole.com in an interview “I really want to go to Iowa”. Two years later and her recruitment has changed quite a bit now that she has over 20 DI offers. I was able to meet up with Maddyn at the Summer Finale Tournament in Des Moines this past weekend where her North Tartan 17u team was competing.

“I definitely have my recruiting very open at this point,” she said. “It’s been so cool visiting different places around the country and different universities that I kind of always thought would be cool to go to…Just trying to find the place that I feel like fits most.”

She has received offers from Virginia Tech, Washington State, Northwestern, Colorado, TCU, Baylor and Ole Miss over the last two months and now has 22 total offers. Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Penn State, Utah, Tennessee, UCLA, Creighton, Florida, South Dakota State and Vanderbilt round out her offer list. She has taken visits to Iowa, UCLA, Tennessee, Michigan, North Carolina, South Dakota State, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

“I think just being able to branch out and meet new coaches, meet new people that I could be playing with in the next few years is really cool,” said Greenway. “I’m going to try to get out to Virginia Tech, Baylor, TCU, Stanford maybe. Just kind of go to other places that have talked to me. We’ll see as I talk to (schools) at the end of this recruiting period.”

Despite her recruitment being open, that does not mean Iowa is not still a huge player to land her. She has attended the Iowa Elite Camp and made two visits to over the last couple of years.

“I’m still in contact (with the coaches) a lot. I’m obviously really close with them.”

As for on the court, it has been a busy summer for the incoming high school sophomore. She has spent the summer playing in various tournaments with her North Tartan squad, including the Nike Nationals in Chicago, IL in early July. Maddyn averaged 13.7 points, 5.1 assists and 4.4 rebounds over seven games, helping her team to an 11th place finish in the Gold Championship Bracket.

“I think it’s definitely different and challenging playing against the best girls in the country, but I think it’s only helped me grow more parts of my game,” said Greenway who is playing up a year with the 17u squad. “Being able to facilitate and play against taller, more athletic girls I think that has really helped me.”

“I would say scoring over big defenders and finding other ways to score besides just getting past a girl,” said Maddyn on what she has improved on the most over the past year. “Facilitating and learning to play and affect the in other ways than just scoring.”

The other big part of her summer came in a USA uniform, as Maddyn was one of 52 players selected to tryout for the 2023 USA Women’s U16 National Team.

“It was good. I feel like it also gave me some confidence from that. Kind of seeing where I stand with those girls and it was really cool playing against some of the people that I’ve heard about and some that I’ve been able to play against (before).”

Maddyn advanced past the first cut down to 22 players and then was selected as one of the 14 finalists for the 12-player roster that would go on to win the gold medal at the FIBA Women’s U16 Americas Championship in Merida, Mexico. Unfortunately, Greenway was one of the two cuts that were needed to finish off the roster.

“Kind of tough getting cut on the last cut, especially making it that far, but I think I grew from that and I learned a bunch of great things,” she said. “It meant a lot to even get the invite and then being able to make it that far, knowing that I was recognized as one of the players. Super cool.”

McDonald’s All-American Selection Committee member Jason Key named Greenway one of five plaeyrs who caught his eye during the u16 trials saying, “Shot the mess out of the ball in early drills. Elite straightline speed with the ball. Pesky and active defender. All the intangibles to supplement the shooting.”

As for the rest of her summer, Maddyn sat out the final three games of the Summer Finale Tournament due to a foot/ankle injury as a precaution before her final event next week in Memphis. Then it is on to high school workouts starting in early August, as her Providence Academy team will be going for a third-straight Class 2A Minnesota state championship.

Last season for the Lions, Greenway averaged 31.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists, including a 60-point outburst against Minnehaha, which put her over 2,000 career points and 31 points in the state championship game against Albany. Her goals for her sophomore season are pretty simple.

“Obviously another state title. That’s my goal. Play with my sister, so kind of getting her incorporated and getting a name for herself and then trying to get my 3,000th point. That’d be pretty cool.”

As for when she might make a decision on her recruitment? Don’t expect that to come anytime soon.

“I’m not trying to make a verbal (commitment) anytime soon,” said Greenway. “I’ve kind of just talked to my parents about when I will make that decision to cut down the list a little bit just to make it easier on myself…(right now) I just try to keep it open and try to talk to everyone.”
