2026 PF Sam Funches Impresses in Front of Kentucky Coaches

Sam Funches, a 2026 power forward out of Mississippi excelled in front of the staff at Kentucky on Friday at the first session of the Nike EYBL in Atlanta. Travis Branham of 247Sports was first to report that Kentucky was in for Funches.

The 6-foot-10, 190-pound big from Germantown (Gluckstadt, MS) and the Alabama Fusion AAU Program told KSR+ that while he didn’t get the chance to speak to the coaches, he has high regard for the Kentucky program. 

“I like how they recruit and I like their new recruiting class that they’re getting,” Funches said. “I can’t wait to see them next year.”

Still years away from high school graduation, Funches is confident that he could succeed at Kentucky. 

“I think I would fit in good because of the way they use their bigs,” he said. 

His Wider Recruitment

Sam Funches is currently being recruited by the likes of Mississippi State, Creighton, Kansas State, Missouri, Auburn, Alabama, and Ole Miss. 

“It’s been really good because of how early everything is happening,” Funches said of the recruiting process. “It’s happening so fast, but I’m really blessed.” 

He is yet to take any visits. However, he noted one area he’s looking for in a program. 

“The way they use their bigs and their discipline,” Funches said. 

Sam Funches’ Game

While On3 is yet to release rankings for the 2026 class, Sam Funches of Germantown (MS)  is currently ranked by ESPN as the No. 9 overall player in the nation. 

He considers his length, his jump hooks, and his post moves as the greatest strengths in his game. 

“I’m able to block shots, get rebounds, and use post moves,” Funches said. “I’m like a stretch-five.” 

This AAU season, Funches has a few key areas he’s looking to improve. 

“I’m trying to work on my handles and the ability to shoot the three ball,” he said. “I’m just trying to get better overall.”
