2025 State commit Tyshun Willis recaps time at Top Dawg Clinic

On3 composite four-star linebacker Tyshun Willis has taken in multiple visits to Mississippi State over the past year or so. But on Thursday, the 2025 Mississippi State commitment had a new experience on campus.

Willis was among numerous Magnolia State natives at Top Dawg Clinic and it was his first opportunity to work on drills with the Bulldogs’ new staff. The Velma Jackson High School standout spent most of his evening under the direction of State defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler and is rated as the nation’s No. 44 edge and the state’s No. 14 prospect by On3 composite rankings.

“It was a fun camp,” Willis recalled. “I got to learn a lot of new stuff in linebacker drills. Coach Hutzler taught us how to stay focused and how to be coachable.”

Willis is State’s most recent commitment in the Class of 2025 and he made that decision on April 22nd. With that decision, one of Willis’ factors for choosing the Bulldogs was his relationship with Hutzler.

“I think Coach Hutzler is a great coach,” added the 6-foot-1 and 230-pound Willis. “He is really good at teaching you new things and he helped me a lot at outside linebacker. He showed us things we can keep using.”

Naturally, Willis’ biggest goal in his Top Dawg Clinic showing was to improve his game. In one area in particular, Willis felt like he got better with Hutzler’s teaching inside camp drills.

“I think I improved during my time at camp,” Willis mentioned. “One thing I improved on was my footwork and I also showed that I am very coachable. I know Coach Hutzler likes to see that.”

Over the weekend, Willis also made another SEC camp stop inside the Magnolia State. He noted of other Power 5 programs still after him along with his possibilities for official visits in the future.

“I went to Ole Miss’ camp, too, this weekend,” Willis said. “I am supposed to go to Missouri and Baylor for official visits but I haven’t set those up yet. I may take one to Arkansas State, too. I still haven’t to set up an official visit with Mississippi State but I am doing that soon. Then Ole Miss is still on me hard, too.”

Regarding his commitment status, Willis remains confident in his Bulldog choice despite the attention of other programs. He noted of the reasons behind his solid status with the Bulldogs.

“I am still very solid with Mississippi State,” noted Willis. “It’s really about their coaches and the environment there. Everyone treats you well and it’s a good place to be.”
