2025 NFL Draft: Mel Kiper Jr. reveals ‘scenario’ where Giants take both Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter

After making multiple moves in free agency, the New York Giants’ plans at No. 3 in the 2025 NFL Draft continue to raise questions. They could go quarterback – despite signing both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston – or they could go with a skill player considering the elite talent atop the board.

ESPN’s Field Yates projected New York to select Shedeur Sanders in his two-round mock draft released Wednesday to develop behind Wilson and Winston. However, Adam Schefter said the “sense” is the Giants could opt for fellow Colorado star Travis Hunter with that selection.

To Mel Kiper Jr., the franchise could find a way to get the best of both worlds. He painted a “scenario” in which the Giants land both Sanders and Hunter.

“I’m looking at maybe the best player on their board – it’s best player on my board – is Travis Hunter,” Kiper said during Yates’ mock draft special. “He’s there, you’re picking three. Shedeur Sanders is five on my board. So you’ve got the No. 1 player, you pass on, take the No. 5 player just because he’s a quarterback? Maybe not.

“How about this scenario? You get Travis Hunter at three. Shedeur Sanders drops, you can trade back into the first round and get Shedeur Sanders. Then, you’ve got Hunter and Sanders if you’re the Giants. That’s a scenario possibly could take place. In Field’s Mock Draft 4.0, he’s got Shedeur at No. 3 to the Giants. I would have no problem with that.”

How the Steelers fit into Mel Kiper’s scenario

Mel Kiper remains high on Shedeur Sanders, who led the nation in completion percentage amid an impressive senior season at Colorado. He sits atop Kiper’s Top 10 QB rankings in the 2025 NFL Draft after throwing for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns while completing 74% of his passes.

But if Sanders falls down the board far enough, the Pittsburgh Steelers would be waiting at No. 21 overall. Should that happen, Kiper wondered if that could be a spot for the Giants to trade up and re-join Sanders and Travis Hunter after their success at Colorado.

“I will say this. What if Shedeur Sanders is there for the Steelers?” Kiper said on NFL Live. “What if Shedeur Sanders gets down to 15 to 20, and the Giants passed on him for Travis Hunter? Do the Giants try to get back up and get both Colorado players – the quarterback and the great all-purpose, Travis Hunter? It’s going to be really fun.

“I said it today, I’ve said it all week. Shedeur Sanders is going to be the most interesting, fascinating prospect in the draft I may have seen in 47 years to see where he lands.”
