2025 linebacker target Landon McComber explains why he gave Notre Dame an extended look

2025 linebacker target Landon McComber explains why he gave Notre Dame an extended look

It isn’t often Landon McComber leaves the West for unofficial college recruiting visits. In fact, of the 11 schools he’s visited, Georgia is only the school he’s traveled cross country to see … until last week.

The Las Vegas Bishop Gorman High sophomore linebacker, McComber, visited Notre Dame for the first time last Friday and Saturday. Irish defensive coordinator Al Golden offered the 6-foot-2, 185-pound McComber during Notre Dame’s Pot of Gold Day recruiting event on March 17.

After the Irish offered the 2025 linebacker a scholarship, it was only a matter of time before he made it to campus. Now that he did, he gave Notre Dame an extended look too. Last weekend’s trip was the only time McComber had spent multiple days on any college campus.

“I was on the campus as if I was a college student or athlete just doing a day in the life,” McComber said. “Seeing the practices and like what they go through every day. It’s just really competitive. …

“They’re physical. Even though they’re brothers, they played like they’re enemies — every single play. That stuck out to me because that’s how you get better. How you get yourself and your family better. …

“It was a great vibe. It’s like a winning mentality.”

Besides Notre Dame and Georgia, McComber has visited Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, San Jose, Southern California, UCLA and UNLV. Georgia, Southern California and UNLV have offered him scholarships.

McComber does not yet have an On3 or On3 Industry Ranking. He has 15 Power Five offers, including ones from Michigan, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Michigan State, Oklahoma and Boston College.

As a sophomore McComber had 65 tackles (42 solo), three tackles for loss, seven sacks and an interception in 11 games.

McComber meets Golden, Marcus Freeman

During Saturday’s practice session, McComber kept his attention on Golden. The high school sophomore linebacker gave a glowing review of the second-year Irish defensive coordinator.

“I just loved seeing how coach Al Golden taught and coached,” McComber said. “He broke things down very technical. It really made sense because he broke it down for everybody to understand. And he actually made sense of it in the game as well.

“He definitely has the most experience out of most coaches and knows what he talks about. … You have to respect how he teaches and the career he’s built.”

In addition to Golden, McComber also met head coach Marcus Freeman, the program’s former defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He described his encounter with the second-year Irish head coach as personable.

“Usually, you’d be very nervous and shy when talking to someone higher up like a coach,” McComber said. “But he was really cool, chill and someone that you could relate to.”

A trip from South Bend to Las Vegas isn’t the easiest for McComber. But it is accessible to keep in touch with the Notre Dame coaching staff. McComber speaks with them weekly, and those conversations will continue after meeting them in person.

“They most definitely shocked me with how much love they showed,” McComber said. “Even before I had the offer, they really showed love. They’re definitely a college I can consider.”
