2025 four-star safety from the Midwest sets first Notre Dame visit

2025 four-star safety from the Midwest sets first Notre Dame visit

One of the top high school defenders in the Midwest has scheduled his first unofficial visit to Notre Dame. On Tuesday, Blue & Gold learned that four-star safety Trey McNutt would make the trip to South Bend on Wednesday.

McNutt will make the trip with two of his teammates at Shaker Heights (Ohio) High, 2025 running back Cornell Beard and 2024 cornerback/wide receiver Jackson Ward, as part of a Midwestern tour of schools. On Monday, McNutt, Beard and Ward visited Northwestern. They saw Wisconsin on Tuesday.

McNutt has Power Five scholarship offers from Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Illinois, South Carolina, Purdue, Michigan, Penn State, Kentucky and Arkansas. So far, he’s also made unofficial college recruiting visits to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. The Bearcats have yet to offer him.

On3 ranked the 6-foot, 180-pound McNutt as the No. 169 overall player and No. 12 athlete and No. 4 player in Ohio in the initial 2025 class player rankings on Monday.

McNutt eager to visit Notre Dame for the first time

The Irish offered McNutt — and 64 other 2025 recruits — during its St. Patrick’s Day Pot of Gold Day recruiting event, which took place on March 17. He was one of five high school sophomore safeties to share a scholarship offer from Notre Dame.

So far, the Irish have offered 95 recruits in the 2025 class.

Since picking up his offer from Notre Dame second-year defensive coordinator Al Golden, McNutt has been itching to visit South Bend to meet the rest of the coaching staff.

“Notre Dame is a great team, and I know their staff is really good,” McNutt told Blue & Gold. “I’m looking forward to building this relationship with the coaches and getting a feel for the Fighting Irish.”

McNutt comes from a football family. His father, Richard McNutt, is the defensive backs coach at Tennessee State. The elder McNutt was a three-year letter-winner at Ohio State and started the first six games at cornerback for the 2002 National Championship team.

The Irish host Tennessee State in this season’s home opener. It will be the first time Notre Dame has faced an FCS program or historically black college or university (HBCU). That game will take place on Sept. 2.

Trey McNutt will kick off a massive visitors week for the Notre Dame football program. So far, Blue & Gold has confirmed 17 recruits will be on campus. The Irish expect as many as 30 high school football prospects in town.
