Miami (Fla.) Gulliver Prep cornerback Amare Sanders has felt a connection to Nebraska since the day they stepped foot in his high school. That same feeling extended to this weekend in Lincoln for his official visit. The three-star cornerback had a great experience this weekend and plans to make a decision in the next month or so.
Amare Sanders and his family arrived in Lincoln on Thursday night, but didn’t start the visit until Friday. Sanders was around a number of recruits all weekend that were also there on their official visit.
“We were in Nebraska from the 2nd to the 4th,” Sanders said. “The visit started on Friday. We got a chance to see the whole campus and meet the entire staff. We saw the facilities, the new facilities, talked to the coaches, had dinner, and were with our host and players.
“On Saturday, we continued to talk with the coaches. We were with our hosts that night. My host was Malcolm Hartzog. I was with Peyton Morgan and Jacory Barney too, and was with Dontae Carter. We definitely had a good time.”
“How are things under Matt Rhule, really?”
This was one of the most asked questions of the weekend by all of the Nebraska official visitors. Hartzog has some interesting perspectives after being recruited by and playing for the previous staff and now playing for Matt Rhule.
“I feel like everyone had the same response to that question. Everyone knows how genuine and true Matt Rhule is. He knows his stuff and cares for his players on and off the field.”
Sanders got some time to talk about where the Nebraska staff saw him playing in the secondary. He’s felt like the Nebraska assistant coach recruiting him has had confidence in Sanders since they met, which continued this weekend.
“I talked to coach Cooper and coach Rhule,” Sanders said. “Coach Coop has believed in me since the day he walked into my school. He knows that I fit the defense and that I can play free safety and corner as well.”
OV to Nebraska gets high marks, more trips to come for Sanders
The visit got a nearly perfect to-perfect grade from Sanders. The people in Nebraska were one of the best parts of the entire visit for Sanders.
“I would rate it a “9.5 or 10”,” Sanders said. “Everything that we were told this weekend, we loved it. I can’t wait to get back. Being around the players was key for me this weekend, and the fans here are amazing. Just walking around downtown was great.”
Sanders looks forward to returning to work once he is back in Miami. He has plans to take some more official visits, but he will be committing either in June or July.
“I am going to make a decision before the season, but I am headed back home to get back to my workouts. I will take some more visits as well. Probably going to take one to Florida, Florida State, Illinois, West Virginia, and Duke. Some of those visits will be in June or July.”
